Patna, August 15, 2026; Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Saturday announced an ambitious target of bringing one crore poor and eligible people who were previously excluded into the state’s ration card scheme.
Addressing the Independence Day gathering at Gandhi Maidan in Patna, Choudhary said more than 30 lakh people had already been enrolled in the ration card scheme during the last month. He said the government would continue efforts to ensure that eligible poor families receive the benefits of the scheme.
The Chief Minister also announced that land allotment certificates were being provided directly to 30,000 landless families across Bihar as part of the government’s welfare initiatives.
Highlighting other initiatives, Choudhary said the state had begun promoting heli-tourism, allowing people to explore Patna by helicopter at an affordable cost. He said the initiative was intended to make the experience accessible even to families from economically weaker sections.
Earlier in the day, Choudhary hoisted the National Flag at Gandhi Maidan on the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day. In a message marking the national festival, he remembered the sacrifices and struggles of freedom fighters and said Independence Day strengthens patriotism, unity and the resolve to contribute towards the country’s progress.
The Chief Minister is also scheduled to visit Mahadalit Tola in Patna to participate in a flag-hoisting ceremony.
On the occasion, Choudhary paid tribute to freedom fighter Sardar Ajit Singh on his death anniversary, recalling his contribution to India’s freedom struggle. He said Ajit Singh’s sacrifice, struggle and patriotism would continue to inspire generations.
Sardar Ajit Singh was known for his opposition to colonial-era anti-farmer laws, including the Punjab Colonisation Act (Amendment) of 1906. His activism also had a significant influence on his nephew and revolutionary Bhagat Singh.
The Bihar government’s latest announcement puts the expansion of the ration card scheme among the key welfare priorities outlined by the Chief Minister on Independence Day.
