Washington, August 15, 2026; US President Donald Trump has said he could declare the Strait of Hormuz a territory of the United States after what he described as the defeat of Iran, escalating rhetoric over the strategically vital waterway.
Speaking at a Republican rally in Long Island, Trump said the US would take steps concerning the Strait of Hormuz after the conflict with Iran concludes. His remarks come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran over control of the key maritime route.
Trump had previously claimed that the United States had “total control” over the Strait of Hormuz and indicated that Washington intended to maintain that position. He also described the US naval presence in the region as a strong blockade and claimed that Iran’s military capabilities had suffered significant damage.
Iran has rejected Trump’s assertions regarding control of the waterway. The Persian Gulf Strait Authority said repeated claims by US officials that the Strait of Hormuz was no longer blocked did not alter what it described as the situation on the ground.
The authority said the strategic passage would remain blocked until Iran’s conditions were accepted, maintaining Tehran’s position amid the ongoing confrontation.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints and a crucial route for global energy supplies. Any prolonged disruption in the waterway can affect oil markets, shipping costs and international energy security.
