US States Proclaim August 15 as India Day Ahead of 80th Independence Day

New Delhi, August 14, 2026; India’s 80th Independence Day is being celebrated with growing enthusiasm across the world, with Indian diplomatic missions organising cultural events, community programmes and official engagements ahead of August 15.

In the United States, several state and local authorities have formally recognised India Day on August 15. The Indian Consulate in Seattle highlighted proclamations issued in Washington State and Nebraska, along with declarations by civic leaders in Bellevue and Kent.

The recognitions acknowledge the contributions of Indian-American communities to local economies, culture and public life while highlighting the shared democratic and social values connecting India and the United States.

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen also proclaimed August 15 as India Day, recognising India’s progress in areas including education, healthcare, science and economic development.

The celebrations have extended beyond formal proclamations. In Chicago, the Indian Consulate hosted an Independence Day reception at the Chicago Cultural Centre, attended by more than 300 guests from diplomatic, political and academic circles. A Bharatanatyam presentation added a cultural dimension to the event.

In New York, the Indian Consulate joined officials from Bergen County for a community celebration that brought together members of the Indian diaspora, including young people and children. Similar messages of support were received from officials in Ohio and New Jersey.

The Indian mission in Atlanta has focused on connecting the diaspora with the country’s artistic traditions. Community members participated in virtual workshops showcasing Madhubani and Gond art, while the Consulate also joined the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.

India’s Independence Day preparations have also taken a cultural turn in Europe. In Berlin, an Indo-German musical collaboration was showcased at the Konzerthaus as part of the Young Euro Classic festival. The programme combined Indian classical and folk traditions with contemporary jazz.

In Ankara, members of the Indian community incorporated the Tricolour into activities supporting the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. In Hanoi, Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Tshering W Sherpa marked the occasion with a special article highlighting India’s development and the expanding strategic relationship between India and Vietnam.

India became independent from British rule on August 15, 1947. The occasion is celebrated annually as Independence Day, while also remembering the difficult legacy of Partition that accompanied independence.

At home, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lead the 80th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort in New Delhi. This year’s programme will highlight 150 years of the legacy of Vande Mataram, along with the role of young Indians in shaping the country’s development vision towards Viksit Bharat 2047.

Around 5,000 special guests from different sections of society are expected to attend the celebrations at the historic Red Fort.
