Sheel Madhur Renews Call for July 22 National Flag Day Ahead of Independence Day

New Delhi, August 13; Saadar India National President and former Director General of Police Sheel Madhur has renewed his appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to officially designate July 22 as National Flag Day or Tiranga Day.

In a fresh communication to the Prime Minister, Madhur urged the Centre to consider making the announcement from the Red Fort during the Independence Day address on August 15. He said such a declaration would give formal recognition to the historical importance of the Tricolour and deepen public engagement with the national symbol.

Madhur has been advocating the proposal for the last seven years. He said July 22 holds a special place in India’s history because the Constituent Assembly adopted the present design of the national flag on that date in 1947, shortly before the country attained independence.

According to Madhur, recognising the date as National Flag Day would provide an opportunity every year to educate citizens, particularly young people, about the history and significance of the Tricolour. He said the national flag represents India’s freedom struggle, sovereignty, constitutional ideals and the sacrifices made during the independence movement.

He also emphasised that a dedicated day for the Tricolour could serve as a nationwide occasion for promoting unity and a shared sense of belonging across India’s diverse communities. Such an observance, he said, could encourage citizens to treat the national flag not only as a symbol of the Republic but also as an enduring reminder of the values that bind the country together.

Madhur expressed hope that the Union government would consider the proposal and use Independence Day to announce a decision on the long-standing demand. He said recognition of July 22 would give the Tricolour a dedicated occasion in the national calendar and create greater awareness about its historical journey.
