Supreme Court Rejects Plea to Declare Netaji as National Son, Issues Warning Against Fresh Petitions

Supreme Court Rejects Plea to Declare Subhas Chandra Bose as ‘National Son’

New Delhi, April 20, 2026: The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition seeking to recognise freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose as the “national son,” firmly cautioning against filing similar pleas in the future.

The apex court expressed strong disapproval over repetitive litigation on matters related to Netaji, indicating that such issues have been brought before it multiple times without substantive grounds. It warned that any attempt to refile a similar petition could invite strict consequences.

The bench made it clear that while the nation holds Netaji in the highest regard for his immense contribution to India’s freedom struggle, symbolic declarations of this nature fall outside the scope of judicial intervention.

The court’s observation underscores its consistent stance on avoiding adjudication in matters driven more by sentiment than legal necessity. It emphasised that the judiciary cannot be used as a platform for symbolic recognition when no enforceable legal right is involved.

This development comes amid a series of petitions in recent times concerning Netaji, many of which have been declined by the court, with judges questioning the repeated filing of similar requests.
