Islamabad, Feb 7 ,2025 : The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has provided an update on Saim Ayub’s recovery, confirming that the young batter is making steady progress during his rehabilitation in England.
Although Ayub remains ruled out of Pakistan’s ICC Champions Trophy campaign at home, he has not yet been declared unavailable for the upcoming white-ball series in New Zealand this March.
“His participation in the New Zealand tour will depend on clearing all necessary fitness tests and medical evaluations,” the PCB stated.
Pakistan is set to play five T20Is and three ODIs from March 16 to April 5.
Ayub’s absence from the Champions Trophy squad is a major setback, as he had established himself as a key player in Pakistan’s 50-over setup. The 22-year-old, who made his ODI debut last year, played a crucial role in Pakistan’s historic series victories in Australia and South Africa. Across nine innings, he amassed 515 runs at an impressive average of 64.37.
However, an unfortunate injury sustained while fielding in the deep forced him to withdraw midway through the Test series against South Africa.
Speaking about Ayub’s exclusion, national selection committee member Asad Shafiq stated, “We understand how eager he was to participate in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Missing a global event while being in outstanding form is undoubtedly disappointing for him.”
“However, as an essential part of our squad, we must prioritize his long-term fitness rather than making hasty decisions,” Shafiq added.
