Kolkata : A Kolkata court is set to announce the verdict in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case today. The case revolves around the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, whose lifeless body was discovered in the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in West Bengal’s Kolkata on August 9, 2024.
The victim, a promising medical professional, was allegedly attacked and killed after being raped. The crime shocked the nation, igniting widespread protests and calls for improved safety measures in state-run medical institutions. The accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10. Investigators identified Roy as the suspect after finding a Bluetooth earphone near the victim’s body, which was linked to him. CCTV footage further incriminated Roy, showing him entering the seminar hall with the device around his neck.
The heinous crime triggered nationwide outrage. Junior doctors in Kolkata and across India staged prolonged protests, demanding justice for the victim and stricter security protocols at government hospitals. The incident raised critical questions about the safety of healthcare professionals, particularly women, within state-run facilities.
Healthcare associations, activists, and the victim’s family have been vocal in their demand for swift justice. The protests underscored broader concerns about systemic issues, including lax security measures in public hospitals and the need for comprehensive reform to ensure the safety of medical staff.
The judgment comes 57 days after the trial began. The in-camera trial commenced on November 12, 2024, and concluded on January 9, 2025, under the supervision of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das. During the trial, 50 witnesses were examined, providing critical evidence and testimony.
