Jamshedpur, Jan 18, 2025: In a thrilling encounter at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, Jamshedpur FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant ended their Indian Super League (ISL) clash in a 1-1 stalemate.
The league leaders, Mohun Bagan SG, drew first blood in the opening half with a composed strike from Subhasish Bose. However, Jamshedpur FC’s Stephen Eze brought the hosts back into contention with a brilliant equaliser at the hour mark.
The draw allowed Jamshedpur FC to climb to the second spot on the table with 28 points, eight behind Mohun Bagan SG’s 36. Notably, the Men of Steel have a game in hand, having played 15 matches compared to the Mariners’ 16.
The game began with both teams striving to assert dominance in wide areas, but the first 15 minutes saw limited clear-cut chances. Mohun Bagan SG threatened to take the lead in the 17th minute with two quick opportunities.
Jamie Maclaren’s effort from inside the penalty area was thwarted by a timely clearance from Stephen Eze. Moments later, Jason Cummings found Liston Colaco with a precise through ball, but Eze once again intervened with a crucial block.
The breakthrough for the Mariners came in the 25th minute when Tom Aldred connected with a corner from Cummings. Subhasish Bose latched onto the header and deftly flicked it past Albino Gomes to put Mohun Bagan SG in the lead.
Cummings nearly doubled the lead in the 36th minute when Maclaren played him through. However, Eze once again rose to the occasion, blocking the Australian’s shot. Mohun Bagan’s attacking momentum continued as Liston squandered another chance, while Maclaren’s effort just before halftime was comfortably saved by Gomes.
Jamshedpur FC manager Khalid Jamil opted for a more aggressive approach in the second half, introducing Javier Siverio, Mobashir Rahman, and Seiminlen Doungel. The tactical changes paid off as Stephen Eze equalised in the 60th minute. Displaying remarkable skill and composure, Eze weaved past multiple defenders and fired a low shot into the bottom-right corner, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
The goal revitalised Jamshedpur’s gameplay, but Mohun Bagan responded with substitutions, bringing on Greg Stewart and Dimitri Petratos. Despite late efforts from both sides, including a close attempt by Petratos and a near miss from Alberto Rodriguez, neither team could find the winning goal.
Jamshedpur FC will now prepare to face Hyderabad FC on January 23, while Mohun Bagan SG will take on Chennaiyin FC on January 21.
