Bengaluru, Jan 18, 2025: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has strongly defended the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) recent attachment of properties in connection with the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) scam, which reportedly implicates Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Speaking to reporters, Chouhan asserted, “Nobody is above the law. Investigative agencies operate independently, and they are fulfilling their responsibilities.” His statement came amidst heightened political tensions surrounding the ongoing investigation.
Responding to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s critique of the BJP’s approach to welfare policies and accusations of promoting “freebies,” Chouhan drew a distinction between necessary public welfare initiatives and politically motivated incentives. He clarified, “When the Prime Minister decided to provide free ration to the poor, it was a necessity. Public needs cannot be equated with freebies. However, distributing benefits solely to secure votes falls into the category of freebies.”
Highlighting welfare accomplishments, Chouhan shared progress under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). He announced that over 4 lakh houses have been allocated under the scheme, with Karnataka receiving an allocation of approximately 7.5 lakh houses for the current financial year.
During his meeting with Karnataka’s Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) Minister Priyank Kharge and Agriculture Minister Krishne Byregowda, Chouhan discussed the state’s requests for additional support in agricultural mechanisation schemes. He noted, “I have advised them to effectively utilise the funds already released, and we will ensure additional funds are provided to meet their requirements.”
Chouhan also addressed the state’s demand for increased staffing under the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) scheme, assuring that the matter is being reviewed to support Karnataka’s agricultural initiatives.
Turning to infrastructure projects, the Union Minister announced the release of Rs 97 crore for watershed development programs. He highlighted that the previously allocated funds had been utilised efficiently, demonstrating Karnataka’s commitment to sustainable resource management.
In his statements, Chouhan underscored the government’s focus on balancing welfare initiatives with accountability, emphasizing that effective governance requires a clear distinction between public service and political opportunism.
The ED’s actions in the MUDA scam and Chouhan’s remarks have sparked a political debate, with the BJP defending its stance on anti-corruption measures and welfare schemes, while opposition parties criticize the timing and intent of the investigations.
As the discussions continue, Chouhan’s statements reinforce the Union government’s commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and development across the country.
