Bengal Political Earthquake as BJP Topples Mamata Banerjee and Crushes TMC Powerhouse

Historic verdict in West Bengal delivers severe blow to Trinamool Congress leadership with cabinet veterans swept aside across the state

Kolkata, May 5, 2026: West Bengal’s political landscape witnessed a dramatic transformation on Tuesday as the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a landmark victory in the Assembly elections, inflicting an unprecedented defeat on the ruling Trinamool Congress and its top leadership. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, along with a large section of her cabinet, failed to retain their constituencies, marking one of the most significant setbacks in the party’s history.

The election outcome reflected widespread voter anger, with 22 out of 35 Trinamool ministers suffering defeats. This sweeping rejection of prominent leaders highlighted a deep dissatisfaction with the party’s governance and signaled a major shift in public sentiment across Bengal.

Among the biggest political casualties was Mamata Banerjee, who lost the prestigious Bhabanipur seat. Senior ministers such as Aroop Biswas, Bratya Basu, Chandrima Bhattacharya, Shashi Panja, and Sujit Bose were also voted out, underlining the scale of the collapse within the Trinamool’s power structure.

Several important ministries, including education, housing, finance, industry, transport, environment, and welfare departments, saw their respective ministers defeated. The widespread nature of these losses suggested that voters were not merely rejecting individual candidates but were expressing strong opposition to the government’s broader administrative record.

Notable defeats were recorded across multiple regions of the state. Industry Minister Shashi Panja was defeated in Shyampukur by BJP’s Purnima Chakraborty by a significant margin, while North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha lost in Dinhata. Environment Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya and Cooperation Minister Pradip Majumdar also suffered substantial losses in their constituencies.

The BJP’s success extended beyond urban centers into rural and semi urban belts, demonstrating its growing influence across Bengal’s diverse political geography. Political analysts believe the scale of this victory points toward a structural realignment in the state’s electoral dynamics, where anti incumbency and governance concerns played a decisive role.

For the Trinamool Congress, the results present a formidable challenge as it seeks to recover from a crushing mandate that has dismantled much of its leadership framework. The loss of senior ministers and the chief minister herself has raised urgent questions about the party’s future direction, internal leadership, and ability to rebuild public trust.

With the BJP now positioned to shape the next government in West Bengal, the state appears set for a new political chapter after years of Trinamool dominance.
