Polling underway in multi phase West Bengal and single phase Tamil Nadu elections with turnout data and key schedule details

Kolkata, April 23, 2026: Voting is currently taking place in the 2026 Assembly elections of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, with citizens, public figures, and political workers actively participating in the democratic process across polling stations.

In West Bengal, elections are being conducted for a total of 294 assembly seats, while Tamil Nadu is voting for 234 seats. The majority requirement stands at 148 seats in West Bengal and 118 seats in Tamil Nadu for any party or alliance to form the government.

Polling began at 7 am on Thursday and is scheduled to continue until 6 pm. Tamil Nadu is conducting voting in a single phase across all constituencies, whereas West Bengal is holding polling for 152 constituencies spread across 16 districts in the first phase.

Initial data released by the Election Commission of India shows that voting is progressing steadily in both states. Tamil Nadu recorded a turnout of 17.69 percent till 9 am, with Tiruppur showing the highest participation and Ramanathapuram reporting comparatively lower figures. West Bengal registered 18.67 percent voter turnout during the same time period, with Paschim Medinipur leading and Malda witnessing lower participation.

The counting of votes for both states will take place on May 4, 2026. On the same day, results for assembly elections in Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry will also be declared along with bypoll results in several constituencies across multiple states.

Election officials have stated that polling is being conducted under strict monitoring to ensure fairness and transparency across all centres.
