Rajnath Singh Targets TMC, Questions West Bengal’s Development Over 15-Year Rule

Defence Minister Says State Growth Has Slowed Despite Long Tenure

New Delhi, April 20, 2026: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched a sharp critique of the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal, stating that the state’s development has slowed despite 15 years in power.

Addressing a political event, Singh said that a period of 15 years is “not a short time” and should have been sufficient to deliver visible and sustained development outcomes for the state.

He argued that long tenure in governance comes with greater responsibility, and questioned the performance of the ruling party in improving infrastructure, employment and overall economic growth.

The Defence Minister said that compared to expectations, West Bengal’s growth trajectory had not matched its potential, suggesting that administrative inefficiencies may have contributed to the slowdown.

He added that development should be measured by tangible improvements in people’s lives rather than political narratives or claims.

Singh’s remarks were aimed at the Trinamool Congress leadership, which has been in power in the state for over a decade under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He further stated that states with strong governance frameworks tend to show faster progress in key sectors such as industry, education and public services.

The comments come amid ongoing political exchanges between the ruling party at the Centre and the West Bengal government over development and law and order issues.

Opposition leaders in the state have often countered such criticism by highlighting welfare schemes and state specific initiatives.Singh emphasised that balanced and accountable governance is essential for ensuring that citizens benefit from long term policy implementation.

He also underlined the importance of aligning state level development with national growth objectives. The remarks are expected to intensify political debate in West Bengal ahead of upcoming electoral discussions, with both sides defending their respective governance records.

The exchange reflects the continuing political friction between central and state leadership over development narratives in one of India’s key states.
