India vs Sri Lanka Travel Debate Sparks Buzz After US Retiree Calls India ‘Overwhelming’

Ex-Oracle employee’s remarks on travel experience ignite online discussion on tourism challenges

New Delhi- A travel comparison shared by an Indian entrepreneur has triggered a fresh online debate after a retired American tech professional described his experience in India as “exhausting” and anxiety-inducing, while calling Sri Lanka peaceful and relaxing.

The remarks were shared by Harshdeep Rapal, co-founder of Legitt AI, who recounted his interaction with a 62-year-old former employee of Oracle in Florida. The retiree, who had previously worked in San Francisco, said he had long heard positive things about India from colleagues and decided to visit after retiring at 58.

However, his experience in India reportedly did not match expectations. According to Rapal’s account, the traveller felt overwhelmed by the environment, stating that instead of relaxation, the trip left him feeling anxious and drained. In contrast, his visit to Sri Lanka was described as calm and rejuvenating.

The comments, shared on social media platform X, quickly gained traction, with users debating the realities of travel experiences in India. The retiree also reportedly pointed to frequent encounters with scams during his visit, a concern that has often been raised by international tourists.

The discussion has once again highlighted ongoing challenges in India’s tourism sector, particularly issues related to visitor safety, transparency, and ease of travel. While many users defended the diversity and vibrancy of India, others acknowledged that infrastructure gaps and tourist-targeted fraud can impact overall experiences.

The viral post has added to a series of similar accounts by foreign travellers, prompting renewed calls for stricter regulation and improved tourist-friendly measures across key destinations.
