Jaipur: The Vice-President of India, C. P. Radhakrishnan, on Saturday described cancer survivors as “true warriors” and called for greater awareness, early detection, and collective action to combat the disease. He was addressing the 23rd Cancer Survivors’ Day event organised by Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Jaipur.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-President said the occasion celebrates resilience and hope, while also recognising the strength of those who have battled cancer. He praised the hospital and its associated trust for their continued contribution to cancer treatment and patient care over the years.
Highlighting the scale of the challenge, he referred to data from the Indian Council of Medical Research, noting that India reports over 15 lakh cancer cases annually. He stressed the importance of strengthening prevention, screening, and treatment systems.
He underlined the impact of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, stating that millions of cancer treatments have been supported under the scheme, with a majority of beneficiaries coming from rural areas. According to him, the programme has played a crucial role in improving access to healthcare for under-served populations.
The Vice-President also pointed to the expansion of cancer care infrastructure, including the establishment of day-care cancer centres in district hospitals and screening initiatives under the National Health Mission. He highlighted the rollout of a nationwide HPV vaccination programme aimed at preventing cervical cancer among young girls.
Emphasising prevention, he urged people to avoid tobacco, smoking, and unhealthy lifestyle habits, noting that such changes can significantly reduce cancer risk. He also stressed the need for better coordination among medical institutions to ensure that advancements in cancer treatment reach all sections of society.
Addressing survivors, he said their journeys serve as powerful examples of courage and determination. He also acknowledged the dedication of doctors and caregivers in supporting patients through treatment and recovery.
Calling for a united effort, he urged society to ensure that no individual faces cancer alone, advocating for stronger awareness campaigns and community support systems.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde and Gajendra Singh Khimsar, among others.
