Assam Woman Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Killing Two Minor Daughters

Fast track court convicts accused in 2023 incident following family dispute

Cachar- A court in Cachar has sentenced a 27-year-old woman to life imprisonment for the murder of her two minor daughters in a 2023 incident, officials said.

The verdict was delivered by a fast track court presided over by Bankim Sharma, which found the accused, Ajmira Begum Laskar, guilty under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

According to prosecution records, the incident occurred in September 2023 in the Sonai area following reported disputes within the family. Police said the woman took her two daughters, aged three years and 10 months, to a nearby pond where the offence took place.

During the investigation, the accused admitted to the act and stated that she had also intended to take her own life but survived. Authorities said the children were later taken to a medical facility, where they were declared dead.

Medical examination confirmed drowning as the cause of death. Following the incident, a complaint was filed by the children’s father, leading to the registration of a case and subsequent arrest.

During the trial, the prosecution argued that the act amounted to intentional homicide. The court, after reviewing witness testimonies, medical reports, and statements recorded during the investigation, held the accused guilty and awarded life imprisonment.

Officials said the judgment underscores the seriousness with which such offences are treated under the law.
