Guwahati: A festive journey turned tragic in Assam after a well-known Bihu performer lost her life and several others were injured in a road accident involving a mini bus and a trailer truck in Tamulpur district.
The victim, Nishamoni Haloi, was travelling with her cultural troupe for a performance when the collision occurred in the Noakhata area on Friday night. Police confirmed that she died at the scene, while 11 others sustained injuries.
Around 30 members of the troupe were on board, including dancers, drummers, and traditional performers from different parts of the state. Authorities said the critically injured have been referred to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, while others are receiving treatment at nearby healthcare facilities.
The incident has cast a shadow over ongoing Rongali Bihu festivities, a time usually marked by celebration and cultural performances across Assam. Nishamoni was widely admired not only as a Bihu dancer but also as a performer of traditional “Nagara Naam”.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed grief over the loss, calling it a heartbreaking moment for the cultural community. He noted that the young artiste’s untimely death has deprived the state of a rising talent and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
Police said the body will be handed over after post-mortem examination, and efforts are underway to determine the exact cause of the crash.
The accident comes at a time when Bihu celebrations are being held across the state, making the loss even more deeply felt among artists and the public alike.
