Italy-Israel Tensions Escalate After Controversial L’Espresso Cover

Rome’s defence policy shift and backlash over imagery deepen diplomatic strain with Tel Aviv

A growing diplomatic rift between Italy and Israel has intensified following a controversial magazine cover and recent policy decisions by Rome.

The April 10 issue of L’Espresso sparked outrage in Israel after featuring an image of an armed Israeli settler filming a Palestinian woman during a raid in the occupied West Bank. The publication used the image to critique Israeli military actions across multiple regions, including Gaza and Lebanon, framing it within a broader narrative on regional expansion.

Israeli officials reacted strongly, with Ambassador Jonathan Peled accusing the magazine of presenting a distorted and biased portrayal. He criticised the publication for what he described as a “manipulative” use of imagery that could fuel negative stereotypes.

The magazine, however, maintained that the photograph was authentic and taken by a professional photojournalist during events in 2025.

The controversy comes amid a significant diplomatic move by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who recently announced the suspension of the automatic renewal of a defence agreement with Israel.

Meloni stated that the decision was driven by disagreements over Israel’s ongoing military actions in Lebanon and broader regional developments. The move marks a notable shift in Italy’s stance, as Rome has traditionally been among Israel’s closer allies in Europe.

Relations between the two nations have been under pressure in recent weeks. Italy had earlier summoned the Israeli ambassador after an incident involving gunfire near a convoy linked to a United Nations mission in Lebanon.

The defence cooperation pact between the two countries dates back to 2003 and has been periodically renewed since coming into force in 2006.

While Israel has downplayed the significance of Italy’s decision, the combination of political disagreements and media controversy has contributed to a visible cooling of ties.

As tensions continue to build, the episode highlights how media narratives and geopolitical developments can intersect, shaping diplomatic relations between nations.
