A 29-year-old man has admitted guilt in a Canadian court for assaulting an Indo-Canadian journalist in a case that drew attention within the community.
The accused, Dilpreet Singh, pleaded guilty to causing bodily harm to Rishi Kumar, a news director at Red FM Calgary. The plea was recorded in a court in Calgary, Canada.
According to prosecutors, the incident took place in September 2024 following a disagreement over content aired by Kumar, also known as Rishi Nagar. The journalist had reportedly discussed sensitive community issues, which the आरोपी took exception to.
After failing to confront Kumar earlier, Singh allegedly approached him outside an event venue and assaulted him in the parking area.
During the brief but violent confrontation, Singh punched Kumar, knocking off his glasses and causing him to fall. The attack continued with multiple blows, leaving the journalist with serious injuries.
Medical reports indicate that Kumar suffered trauma to his eye, requiring surgery, with potential long-term complications including vision issues.
The court was informed that the conviction could have significant immigration consequences for Singh, though sentencing details are yet to be finalised.
Authorities clarified that the assault is separate from another case involving weapons at a community gathering. In that matter, two individuals were charged with multiple offences related to illegal firearms possession.
The attack raised concerns about the safety of journalists and tensions within sections of the community. The case underscores the risks faced by media professionals while reporting on sensitive issues.
