New Delhi, August 23, 2026; Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal is scheduled to visit Brazil, Argentina and Chile from August 24 to 28 as India steps up efforts to expand and diversify its trade relations with South America.

During the visit, Agrawal will lead discussions with Brazil and Argentina through Joint Trade Committee meetings, focusing on strengthening bilateral commercial ties and identifying fresh opportunities for businesses in both countries.

The Commerce Secretary will then travel to Chile, where talks are expected to focus on taking the existing India-Chile Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) towards a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Negotiations between India and Chile have reportedly reached an advanced phase, with market access and cooperation related to critical minerals among the key matters still under discussion. India is seeking stronger access to Chile’s mineral resources, while Chile is looking for expanded opportunities in the Indian market.

The visit comes as India looks to broaden its trading partnerships beyond traditional markets and strengthen economic links with resource-rich South American economies.

New Delhi is also exploring closer trade cooperation with the MERCOSUR bloc, which includes Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia. Discussions on the framework and terms of reference for a possible expanded Preferential Trade Agreement are currently underway.

The three-nation visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to India’s efforts to strengthen economic engagement with South America and create new avenues for trade and investment.
