CWG 2026: Neeraj Chopra to Mirabai Chanu, India’s Top Medal Hopes Set for Glasgow Challenge

New Delhi: As the Commonwealth Games 2026 approach in Glasgow, India’s medal hopes will once again rest on a mix of experienced champions and emerging stars. The absence of several sporting powerhouses from the competition creates a major opportunity for Indian athletes to secure top finishes across multiple disciplines.

India has traditionally performed strongly at the Commonwealth Games, particularly in sports such as weightlifting, boxing, wrestling, athletics and para-sports. This year, several Olympic medallists and world champions are expected to lead the country’s medal campaign.

Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu remains one of India’s strongest contenders for a gold medal in Glasgow. Competing in the women’s 48kg category, the weightlifting star enters the event with impressive recent performances and years of experience at the highest level.

Having already won gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022, Chanu will look to repeat her success and strengthen India’s dominance in the sport.

World champion boxer Jaismine Laborima will spearhead India’s women’s boxing campaign. Known for her technical skills, reach advantage and aggressive style, she enters the competition among the favourites in the 57kg category.

With India’s strong boxing tradition at the Commonwealth Games, expectations will be high from Lamboria and other Indian pugilists.

Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain will aim to complete her medal collection by winning the Commonwealth title. Competing in the 75kg category, Lovlina brings valuable international experience and remains a major threat to her opponents.

Apart from Chopra, athletes like Murali Sreeshankar in long jump and Soman Rana in para-athletics are expected to boost India’s medal tally. Sreeshankar’s recent performances after injury recovery have increased hopes of another podium finish, while Rana remains a strong contender in the shot put event.

In judo, Tulika Mann will carry India’s expectations in the women’s +78kg category. After winning silver at Birmingham 2022, she will look to go one step further in Glasgow and claim the top prize.
