Dehradun: A tragic accident occurred in Dehradun on Thursday when senior Congress leader Amar Mehta lost his life while supervising arrangements for the party’s ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme, which is set to be addressed byRahul Gandhi later in the day.
According to party leaders, Mehta was overseeing preparations at Bannu School Ground when a heavy iron component from the temporary event structure suddenly fell, causing severe head injuries. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead despite medical efforts to save him.
Expressing grief over the incident, Uttarakhand Congress leaders described Mehta as a dedicated party worker who had been actively involved in organising the student-focused programme. Party spokespersonPratima Singh said the Congress stands firmly with the bereaved family and extended heartfelt condolences over the untimely loss.
Despite the tragedy, the party has decided to proceed with the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ event as planned. Organisers said the programme has received a massive response from students across the state and will be conducted in memory of the late leader.
The campaign is aimed at engaging with young people on issues affecting students, including alleged examination paper leaks, recruitment irregularities and concerns related to the education system. Rahul Gandhi is expected to interact directly with students during the event as part of the Congress’ nationwide youth outreach initiative.
Ahead of the visit, Rahul Gandhi criticised the Uttarakhand government over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations, alleging that repeated paper leaks have undermined the confidence of job aspirants despite the existence of anti-cheating laws.
The Congress has been organising ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programmes in different parts of the country to highlight education-related concerns and connect with students on issues affecting their academic and career prospects.
