Uttam Nagar Violence Case: Juvenile Justice Board Denies Bail to Accused Minors

Board says release of minors could escalate tensions, prioritises safety and rehabilitation

New Delhi: The Juvenile Justice Board has rejected bail pleas of two minors accused in a fatal clash in Uttam Nagar, stating that their release at this stage could disturb public peace and pose risks to their own safety.

The case relates to an incident on March 4, when a 26-year-old man lost his life following a violent altercation between two neighbouring families. The clash reportedly began after a water balloon accidentally hit a woman, triggering tensions between the groups.

While hearing the matter, presiding officer Chitranshi Arora observed that releasing the minors could aggravate the already sensitive situation in the area and undermine public confidence in the justice system.

The board noted that the incident had caused significant community tension, impacting social harmony and law and order.

According to the order, keeping the minors in protective custody is not punitive but necessary to ensure their safety, psychological well-being, and rehabilitation under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015.

The board also highlighted the possibility of retaliation or emotional harm if the minors were released, calling it a “real and tangible risk.”

While acknowledging concerns regarding disruption to the minors’ education, the board said that safety and protection must take precedence when credible risks are involved.

The incident had earlier sparked protests in the area, with reports of vehicles being set on fire. Police have arrested several accused in connection with the case, and further investigation is underway.
