Hawaii Braces for Fresh Flood Risk as Powerful Kona Storm Brings Heavy Rain

State on high alert weeks after devastating floods; authorities warn of landslides and possible evacuations

Just weeks after experiencing its most severe flooding in two decades, Hawaii is once again facing a dangerous weather threat as a strong Kona storm sweeps across the islands, bringing intense rainfall and raising fears of widespread flooding.

Meteorological agencies have issued a flood watch covering the entire state through Friday, cautioning that prolonged downpours could trigger flash floods and landslides. Forecasts indicate rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches across many areas, while isolated regions could receive more than 10 inches within a short span.

The islands of Big Island and Kauai are expected to bear the brunt of the storm, although officials say shifting weather patterns could spread heavy rain across multiple locations.

The Kona storm marked by the red "L" is fueling heavy rain by funneling in tropical moisture across Hawaii through the end of the week.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi has urged residents to remain prepared for emergency situations, including potential evacuations. The city plans to activate its emergency response systems and deploy personnel to high-risk zones as a precaution.

Kona storms, known for their slow-moving nature, can draw large amounts of moisture from the Pacific Ocean, leading to sustained and intense rainfall. This latest system is the third such storm to affect the region since mid-March.

The timing has heightened concerns, as many areas are still recovering from earlier floods that caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. With soil already saturated, even moderate rainfall could quickly lead to dangerous runoff and rising water levels.

Initial showers have already impacted parts of the state, prompting warnings in some regions. Emergency officials have reported localized flooding incidents, including water entering residential properties in certain areas.

Weather experts warn that rainfall intensity could increase as the storm strengthens, particularly from Thursday onward. Repeated bands of rain over the same locations may result in significant water accumulation in a short period.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve by the weekend as the storm system moves away, though intermittent rain may persist.

Authorities continue to advise residents to stay alert, monitor official updates, and take necessary precautions as the situation develops.
