New Delhi, February 25: Emphasising the Centre’s resolve to strengthen self-reliance in the defence sector, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh called upon young diplomats to actively support India’s expanding indigenous defence industry and promote its capabilities worldwide.
The interaction took place at South Block, where the 2025 batch of Indian Foreign Service (IFS) trainee officers met the Defence Minister. Addressing the officers, Singh underscored the government’s focus on enhancing domestic defence production and boosting exports under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
He noted that India has steadily reduced its dependence on imports and is now emerging as a manufacturer and exporter of advanced defence platforms across land, air and maritime domains. The minister highlighted the importance of absorbing cutting-edge technologies and fostering innovation to further strengthen the sector.
Diplomats Key to Defence Outreach
Stressing the strategic role of diplomats, Singh said Indian missions abroad play a crucial part in promoting defence partnerships and expanding export opportunities. He encouraged the trainees to uphold integrity and professionalism while representing India overseas.
The Defence Minister also reminded them that they serve as ambassadors of the aspirations of 1.4 billion citizens and must carry forward India’s civilisational values while engaging with diverse cultures around the world.
Briefing on Defence Policy
Prior to the meeting, the trainees were given presentations by officials of the Ministry of Defence on defence diplomacy, budgetary priorities, tri-service integration and acquisition procedures.
The 2025 IFS batch includes 55 trainee officers, among them two officers from Bhutan, reflecting India’s close diplomatic ties with its neighbour.
The interaction highlighted the growing convergence between foreign policy and defence strategy, with the government aiming to position India as a significant player in the global defence manufacturing ecosystem.
