New Delhi: Under the stewardship of CM Rekha Gupta, who heads the State Names Authority (SNA), a review of metro station names in the national capital has led to a mix of revisions and continuations. While several existing names have been updated, others have been kept in line with what was originally outlined in the Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
As Chairperson of the SNA, the Chief Minister stated that metro station names are not just transit markers but also symbols of the heritage and character of the neighbourhoods they represent. She explained that the exercise factored in historical background, social and cultural relevance, and suggestions put forward by public representatives. Each decision, she noted, was taken after thorough review and careful consideration.
Out of 21 station names proposed in the DPR, the Authority decided to keep 12 unchanged, revise seven, and completely rename two. The Chief Minister underlined that the objective was to prevent confusion among passengers and ensure that station names accurately correspond with their geographical locations.
In certain cases, combined names reflecting nearby prominent localities have been approved to make wayfinding easier and improve commuter convenience.
The names retained as originally proposed include Majlis Park, Bhalaswa, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Deepali Chowk, Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura, Khajuri Khas, Soorghat, Jharoda Majra, Burari, Pushpanjali, and Maujpur-Babarpur.
Stations that will have modified names are Uttari Pitampura–Prashant Vihar (earlier Prashant Vihar), Jagatpur–Wazirabad (earlier Jagatpur), Nanak Pyau–Derawal Nagar (earlier Derawal Nagar), Khanpur–Vayusainabad (earlier Khanpur), Nanaksar–Sonia Vihar (earlier Sonia Vihar), Shri Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar (earlier Mayur Vihar Pocket–1), and Mangolpur Kalan–West Enclave (earlier West Enclave). These changes were introduced to better represent local identity and provide clearer directional context.
Two stations have been entirely renamed: Haiderpur Village (earlier North Pitampura) and Madhuban Chowk (earlier Pitampura), with the revised names intended to more closely align with the character and recognition of the respective areas.
The Chief Minister added that the Authority ensured every name reflects ground realities as well as public sentiment. All decisions were taken following detailed discussions and factual assessment of each proposal. She further said that any well-reasoned suggestions made in the future in the larger public interest will be examined by the Authority in accordance with established norms and procedures.
