New Zealand Edge Out West Indies by 9 Runs to Seal T20I Series 2-1

Despite a late blitz from Romario Shepherd and Shamar Springer, the Blackcaps held their nerve in a nail-biting finish at Nelson to clinch the T20I series.

Nelson [New Zealand], November 9: New Zealand triumphed in a thrilling finale at Saxton Oval, edging out the West Indies by nine runs to clinch the T20I series 2-1. Despite a ferocious late assault from Romario Shepherd (49 off 34) and Shamar Springer (39 off 20), the hosts held on to secure victory in a match that swung dramatically until the final over.

Chasing 178, the West Indies collapsed to 88/8 in 12.3 overs, undone by the combined brilliance of Jacob Duffy and Ish Sodhi, who took three wickets each. But when all seemed lost, Shepherd and Springer launched a stunning counterattack, stitching together a 78-run ninth-wicket stand off just 39 balls, nearly pulling off an improbable win.

Needing just 13 off 7 balls, the visitors’ hopes were dashed when Springer fell to a sensational diving catch by Duffy. Kyle Jamieson, tasked with defending 12 in the final over, replicated his heroics from the second T20I by dismissing Shepherd to seal the match for the Blackcaps.

Earlier, New Zealand, after opting to bat, posted 177/9 with Devon Conway (56 off 34) and Daryl Mitchell (41 off 24) leading the charge. Conway struck his 12th T20I fifty, while Mitchell’s late fireworks ensured a competitive total despite disciplined bowling from the Caribbean attack.

The victory underscored New Zealand’s composure under pressure and highlighted West Indies’ spirited fightback, led by two of their most dynamic all-rounders.
