The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has declared the gender tests conducted by the International Boxing Association (IBA) on two female boxers during last year’s World Championships as illegitimate and lacking credibility. IOC spokesperson Mark Adams criticized the tests, stating they are not legitimate and are flawed in their execution and ad hoc nature, which do not merit a response.
The controversy heightened following Imane Khelif’s dominant performance in the round-of-16 welterweight fight against Angela Carini. Khelif’s aggressive punches led Carini to withdraw just 46 seconds into the match, causing a social media uproar. The IBA’s subsequent promise to pay Carini $50,000 in prize money further intensified the dispute with the IOC.
IOC President Thomas Bach accused the IBA of launching a defamation campaign against the Olympic body amid these tensions. Despite the controversy, both Khelif and the other boxer, Lin, have advanced to the semifinals in their respective weight categories in Paris.
