Maharashtra : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in nine districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Pune, Ahmednagar, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. The alert, issued in light of intense monsoonal activity, urges citizens to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The state government has appealed to the public to strictly follow weather advisories and remain vigilant.
Along the Konkan coast, Goa, and parts of Madhya Maharashtra, isolated places are expected to experience very heavy rainfall. Coastal and South Interior Karnataka are also on high alert for similar weather patterns today.
The IMD further stated that heavy rainfall is likely to continue over the next 2–3 days in Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Gangetic West Bengal, Mahe, Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Odisha, and the northeastern states, including Assam and Meghalaya. Authorities in these regions have been advised to monitor local developments and prepare for potential disruptions in daily life.
In addition to the rainfall warnings, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are forecasted for several other parts of the country. These include Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Odisha, and West Bengal. Notably, Himachal Pradesh may also experience hailstorms today, which could affect crops and outdoor infrastructure.
Meanwhile, in western Rajasthan, heatwaves and dust storms are expected to persist, creating difficult conditions in already high-temperature zones. The IMD has cautioned vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and children, to avoid prolonged exposure during peak hours.
In a positive development, the Southwest Monsoon has arrived early in Telangana, covering parts of seven districts, including Mahbubnagar. This onset has occurred nearly two weeks ahead of the usual June 10th timeline. According to the IMD, this early arrival is due to favourable meteorological conditions, such as consistent rainfall, enhanced moisture flow, wind convergence, and conducive solar radiation levels.
The early monsoon in Telangana is expected to bring relief from soaring temperatures and replenish water sources.
