Faridabad July 20 2024 : The National Power Training Institute (NPTI), under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, is set to establish a Centre of Excellence for Energy Transformation (COE) in Faridabad. This initiative was announced during a collaborative workshop held between NPTI and the German company Deutsche Gesellschaft Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) at Nehru Place, Delhi.
The workshop, attended by dozens of stakeholders from the power sector, focused on discussing the forthcoming COE. Dr. Tripta Thakur, Director General of NPTI, highlighted that the COE, to be located at NPTI’s Corporate Office in Sector 33, Faridabad, will be instrumental for employees and students in the energy sector who aim to research and understand the continuous changes in energy technologies. The COE will cover various domains including future smart meters, SCADA technology, and simulators.
Dr. Thakur emphasized the global dependence on fossil fuels like coal, petrol, and diesel for centuries, which has contributed to rising temperatures and climate change. She underscored the urgent need to transition to renewable energy sources such as solar, biomass, and geothermal energy. India, she noted, has committed to adding 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Despite India ranking third globally in electricity generation (440 GW) and having a robust transmission system, Dr. Thakur pointed out that the distribution system requires significant improvement, for which the Ministry is providing financial assistance through the RDSS scheme.
Kuldeep Sharma, Head of Energy Transformation with Discoms at GIZ, launched the IGEN – Energy Transformation with Discoms project during the workshop. The event saw participation from several prominent figures including A.K. Rajput from CEA, A.K. Tripathi, Advisor from MNRE, Yogesh Kumar from MVNNL, Sachin Talewar, Director (Technical), Harish Saran, Executive Director at PTC, Surjeet Banerjee, ED- Grid India, Abhay Kumar, Head (Engineering) at PGCIL, Prof. Abhijeet R. Abhiyankar from IIT Delhi, Prof. Ankush Sharma from IIT Kanpur, Vijay Menghani, Chief Engineer at CEA, and senior officials from DERC, IEX, E&Y, TILA Foundation, Gujarat Power Research and Development Cell, PGVCL, and Artech Solonics Limited.
The workshop concluded with a Stakeholder Advisory Board meeting for the Centre of Excellence for Energy Transition, emphasizing the collaborative effort to advance India’s energy transformation goals.
