During her two-day state visit to Fiji, President Droupadi Murmu hosted a reception with the Indian community and Friends of India in Suva, the nation’s capital. In her speech, President Murmu expressed her deep sense of belonging and warmth towards Fiji, noting her pleasure in witnessing the Indian-origin community preserve their cultural heritage and values. She highlighted her satisfaction with Fiji’s recognition of Girmit Diwas as a public holiday and the status of Hindi as one of the official languages.

President Murmu praised the Indian diaspora for their substantial role in Fiji’s development and the broader Pacific region, acknowledging their contributions to economic and social progress. She reiterated the strong historical ties between India and Fiji and underscored the need for both countries to work together to represent and address the concerns of the Global South on the international stage.
