Suva/New Delhi, August 6, 2024: On her historic state visit to Fiji, President Droupadi Murmu was honored with the Companion of the Order of Fiji, the nation’s highest civilian award. The award was presented by Fijian President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Monday.
In her acceptance speech, President Murmu highlighted the deep ties of friendship between India and Fiji, emphasizing shared values of democracy, pluralism, and diversity. Addressing the Fijian Parliament, she underscored the strong bonds and mutual respect that define the India-Fiji relationship.
President Murmu praised Fiji’s gentle way of life, respect for traditions, and multicultural environment, noting that the world has much to learn from Fiji, especially in an increasingly conflict-ridden world. She also mentioned India’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s priorities, including the establishment of a Super Specialty Cardiology Hospital in Suva. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka warmly welcomed President Murmu at Nausori Airport with full state honors. This visit marks the first time an Indian President has visited Fiji, underscoring a significant milestone in India-Fiji relations.
President Murmu’s visit includes discussions on climate justice and cooperation, with India pledging to support Fiji and other ocean states in their climate initiatives. She expressed confidence in the potential for a stronger partnership between the two nations for the mutual benefit of their peoples. This visit is part of President Murmu’s three-nation tour, reflecting India’s commitment to strengthening ties with the Pacific region and promoting global cooperation.
