UPSC Chairman Manoj Soni Resigns Prematurely, Citing ‘Personal Reasons’

New Delhi, July 20, 2024 : Manoj Soni, the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), has tendered his resignation five years before the end of his tenure, citing “personal reasons” in his resignation letter. Soni’s resignation, submitted around a fortnight ago, has not yet been accepted by the top officials, according to sources cited by PTI.

Soni, who took office as the UPSC Chairman on May 16, 2023, was supposed to serve until May 15, 2029. Despite his appointment, sources revealed that he was initially reluctant to assume the position and had requested to be relieved. Soni has expressed a desire to devote more time to socio-religious activities.

Before joining the UPSC, Soni served three terms as the Vice Chancellor of various universities and was the youngest-ever Vice Chancellor in India when he assumed the role at The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda from April 2005 to April 2008.

Soni’s resignation comes amid a controversy involving trainee IAS officer Puja Khedkar, who, along with her family, is accused of faking her identity to gain more attempts at the public service commission examination. Khedkar was recently transferred out of Pune for allegedly misusing her power and privileges.

The Khedkar case has sparked widespread debate and scrutiny on social media, with users highlighting instances of fake certificate use by serving Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) officers. Many have urged authorities to take action against those found guilty of using bogus certificates to claim benefits reserved for the Other Backward Class (non-creamy layer) and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).

Despite the timing, sources clarified that Soni’s resignation is not connected to the controversies surrounding the UPSC and the allegations related to the Puja Khedkar issue.
