A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal in Thane has awarded compensation of ₹86.62 lakh to a young man who sustained severe injuries in a road accident that left him with 90% functional disability.
The order was passed by the tribunal, which held both the truck owner and IFFCO Tokio General Insurance Company jointly responsible for paying the compensation, along with an annual interest of 9%.
The incident dates back to August 2021, when the victim, then an engineering student, was travelling on a motorcycle along the Vasai-Navapur Road. According to the claim, a truck hit him from behind, resulting in critical injuries to his lower body and abdomen.
Medical records presented before the tribunal indicated that the victim underwent multiple surgeries and continues to face serious physical challenges.
While assessing the case, the tribunal observed that the impact of the injuries went beyond the medical disability percentage. It concluded that the claimant’s ability to work had been severely affected, determining his functional disability at 90%.
Expert testimony highlighted the possibility of long-term complications, including chronic pain, mobility issues, and permanent physical impairment.

The tribunal also considered the overall impact on the victim’s quality of life, including both physical and social consequences.
As part of the order, ₹20 lakh from the total compensation will be kept in a fixed deposit, while the remaining amount will be transferred directly to the claimant.
The case was argued by legal representatives for both sides, with the tribunal relying on medical evidence and testimonies to arrive at its conclusion.
This ruling highlights the judiciary’s approach towards ensuring fair compensation in cases involving severe, life-altering injuries.
