Mexico: A deadly shooting at Mexico’s historic Teotihuacán pyramids has left one Canadian tourist dead and at least 13 others injured, turning one of the country’s most visited heritage sites into a scene of panic and chaos.
According to local authorities and media reports, the incident occurred around mid-morning when an armed man climbed a section of the ancient pyramid complex and began firing shots while tourists were present at the site. The sudden attack sent visitors scrambling for cover as gunfire echoed across the archaeological zone.
Officials said the shooter fired repeatedly from an elevated position, causing widespread panic. Several tourists reportedly threw themselves to the ground while others rushed down the pyramid to escape the violence.
Among the injured were multiple foreign nationals, including citizens from the United States, Colombia, Russia, Brazil, and Canada. At least seven people sustained gunshot wounds, while others were hurt during the chaos that followed.
Emergency services and security forces quickly responded, securing the area and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. A National Guard unit was also deployed shortly after the incident to manage the situation.
Witness accounts described continuous bursts of gunfire, with some reporting more than twenty shots fired during the attack. Videos circulating on social media allegedly showed tourists fleeing and taking cover as shots rang out from the Pyramid of the Moon.
Authorities confirmed that the attacker later died by suicide after the shooting spree.
The incident comes at a sensitive time for Mexico, as the country prepares to host a large influx of international visitors for upcoming global events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences and confirmed that an investigation is underway, while Canadian officials also acknowledged the death of a citizen and extended support to affected families.
The Teotihuacán pyramids, located near Mexico City, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attract millions of tourists each year, making the attack one of the most serious security incidents at the location in recent memory.
