Canada: A Canadian court has delivered a guilty verdict in the high-profile 2022 shooting case involving Indian student Kartik Vasudev, concluding that the accused is responsible for first-degree murder.
The case dates back to April 7, 2022, when 21-year-old Vasudev, originally from Ghaziabad and recently arrived in Canada for higher studies, was shot near Toronto’s Sherbourne subway station. He had moved to the country only months earlier to pursue an MBA.
According to court findings, the attacker, Richard Edwin, travelled to the station armed with a firearm. After reaching the area, he reportedly approached Vasudev on the street, briefly moved past him, then turned back and opened fire multiple times as the student attempted to walk away. Vasudev collapsed at the scene and later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators also linked Edwin to another fatal shooting that occurred within a short span of days, involving a separate victim with no known connection to him.
During the trial, the defence argued that Edwin was suffering from a severe psychiatric condition and should not be held criminally responsible. However, the court acknowledged that while he had schizophrenia, evidence showed he was capable of understanding his actions and their moral consequences.
The presiding judge noted that the sequence of events reflected planning and deliberate behaviour rather than a spontaneous or confused act. The court further stated that the attacks were not triggered by immediate hallucinations or external provocation, but appeared to have been prepared in advance.
With these observations, the court rejected the insanity defence and convicted Edwin on two counts of first-degree murder.
Following the verdict, relatives of Kartik Vasudev described the decision as a significant moment of closure after years of waiting, though they emphasized that no legal outcome could compensate for the personal loss.
