New Delhi, April 20, 2026: Indian Railways has announced an extensive summer travel plan under which 18,262 special train trips will be operated across the country between April and July 2026 to manage the seasonal surge in passenger demand.
Officials said the initiative has been designed to provide relief to travellers during the peak summer period by reducing waiting lists and improving connectivity across major routes.
Out of the total planned services, 908 summer special trains have been approved, with 660 already notified for operation, accounting for 11,294 trips available for advance booking and travel planning.
The railways stated that the large scale deployment reflects a proactive strategy to handle increased passenger movement during holidays, festivals and vacation travel months.
Among railway zones, Central Railway has emerged as one of the leading operators with 3,082 approved trips, followed by East Central Railway with 2,711 trips and North Western Railway with 2,245 trips.
South Central Railway, Western Railway and Northern Railway are also contributing significantly to the network, ensuring widespread coverage across key regions.
Officials said the distribution of special trains has been carefully planned to balance demand across routes and provide efficient passenger handling during the high traffic season.
The initiative is expected to benefit millions of passengers by offering additional berths, improved seat availability and more confirmed ticket options during peak travel periods.
Railway authorities noted that the expanded services will help ease congestion on regular trains and improve overall travel experience for long distance passengers.
The special trains will operate across major corridors connecting metropolitan cities, tourist destinations and regional hubs, ensuring better accessibility during the summer rush.
Passengers are also expected to benefit from improved scheduling and better last mile connectivity due to the expanded network.
Officials highlighted that this is part of Indian Railways’ broader effort to enhance passenger convenience through advance planning and capacity augmentation.
The move comes as part of ongoing efforts to modernise and optimise railway operations in response to rising travel demand across the country.
With thousands of additional trips scheduled, the railways aim to ensure smoother, safer and more comfortable journeys for travellers nationwide.
The initiative underscores the organisation’s focus on passenger centric service delivery and operational readiness during high demand periods.
