Chennai, May 13, 2026: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government successfully passed the floor test in the state Assembly, securing 144 votes in favour, according to official proceedings and media reports.
The confidence motion, taken up in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, saw the ruling alliance comfortably cross the majority mark of 117 in the 234 member House. The final tally placed the government well above the required strength, confirming its mandate in the Assembly.
The victory was made possible with support from key alliance partners including Congress, CPI, CPI M, VCK and IUML, along with backing from other smaller parties and independent MLAs. Several legislators also crossed party lines or extended conditional support during the vote.
During the proceedings, some opposition members either walked out or chose not to participate in the vote, which further strengthened the ruling side’s numerical advantage in the House.
The result marks an important political milestone for the newly formed TVK government, which came to power after the recent Assembly elections and has now successfully demonstrated its majority strength on the floor of the House.
With the trust vote cleared, the government is expected to focus on governance priorities and implementation of its early policy agenda in the coming weeks.
