Haryana, Rajasthan Sign Landmark Water-Sharing MoU in Presence of Amit Shah; Major Dam Projects Set to Gain Momentum

Haryana-Rajasthan agreement aims to boost water security, accelerate major dam projects, and strengthen inter-state cooperation.

New Delhi,29 June 2026 : In a significant step towards strengthening inter-state cooperation on water resource management, the Governments of Haryana and Rajasthan signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The agreement is expected to enhance water-sharing arrangements, improve coordination between the two states, and accelerate the implementation of key river infrastructure projects.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Union Minister for Jal Shakti C.R. Patil, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, highlighting the Centre’s commitment to promoting collaborative and sustainable water management among states.

Under the agreement, Rajasthan will receive its allocated share of water in accordance with the provisions of the 1994 Upper Yamuna River Board Agreement. The move is aimed at ensuring the fair distribution of water resources while addressing the long-standing requirements of the participating states.

The agreement is also expected to expedite the execution of three strategically important multipurpose dam projects—*Renuka Dam, Kishau Dam, and Lakhwar Dam*. These projects are considered crucial for improving water availability, strengthening irrigation systems, enhancing drinking water supply, and supporting overall water security in the region.

Officials said that faster implementation of these projects would contribute to more efficient river basin management and provide long-term benefits to millions of people across northern India. The projects are also expected to improve flood management, enhance storage capacity, and ensure the optimal utilization of available water resources.

The MoU reflects a renewed commitment by both Haryana and Rajasthan to work together in resolving inter-state water issues through dialogue, coordination, and cooperative governance. It is expected to establish a stronger institutional framework for water resource planning and implementation while promoting sustainable development.

The presence of senior Union and state leaders at the signing ceremony underscored the importance of the agreement in advancing India’s broader objective of equitable water distribution and integrated river basin management. The initiative is being viewed as a major milestone in strengthening inter-state relations and ensuring efficient utilization of shared water resources for future generations.
