Galle, August 16, 2026; India finished the second day of the opening Test against Sri Lanka in a commanding position after reaching 460 for nine wickets, with wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel calling the total a strong platform for the next phase of the contest.
India resumed at 288 for two and added another 172 runs during a rain-interrupted day. Devdutt Padikkal produced the standout performance, converting his overnight century into a career-best 167 and giving India a substantial advantage on a Galle surface where batting conditions remained favourable.
Jurel made an important contribution lower down the order, scoring 51 before Sri Lanka’s bowlers struck back during the latter stages of India’s innings. KL Rahul also added 82, while Rishabh Pant contributed a brisk 39.
Sri Lanka’s spinners prevented India from completely dominating the day. Prabath Jayasuriya claimed four wickets for 109 runs, while debutant Keshara Nuwantha finished with three wickets for 175 as the hosts recovered after India’s strong start.
At the close of play, Kuldeep Yadav was unbeaten on 12 and Prasidh Krishna was on one, leaving India one wicket away from completing its first innings.
Jurel believes the priority has now shifted from accumulating runs to making effective use of the ball. With a sizeable first-innings total already secured, India will look to maintain discipline and consistently hit the right lengths when Sri Lanka come out to bat.
The young batter also praised Padikkal’s impressive return to Test cricket. Jurel pointed to Padikkal’s earlier performances for India A as evidence of the left-hander’s ability to convert opportunities into substantial scores.
Padikkal’s 167 has placed him at the centre of India’s impressive batting effort, while Jurel’s half-century has further strengthened the visitors’ lower-middle order.
With weather continuing to affect proceedings in Galle, India will hope its bowlers can make the most of whatever playing time is available on Day 3 and turn its strong batting position into sustained pressure on Sri Lanka.
