Trump Halts Hormuz Escort Mission Amid Saudi Airspace Dispute

Report Says Riyadh Declined US Request for Airspace Access During Naval Operation

Washington, May 7, 2026: US President Donald Trump has reportedly paused the American naval mission aimed at escorting commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz after Saudi Arabia refused permission for US aircraft to use its airspace and military facilities linked to the operation.

According to media reports citing American officials, the proposed mission known as “Project Freedom” faced a setback after Saudi authorities declined access to Prince Sultan Airbase and restricted overflight permissions for aircraft connected to the escort programme.

The development reportedly came shortly after President Trump announced the naval initiative designed to support safe commercial shipping movement through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a region witnessing heightened tensions amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the United States.

Reports stated that Saudi Arabia and several Gulf nations were not informed in advance about the announcement of the operation. Sources indicated that Trump later held discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman but failed to secure approval for logistical cooperation linked to the mission.

The temporary suspension of the escort effort has also been linked to ongoing diplomatic attempts aimed at reducing tensions with Iran. President Trump said the pause would provide time for negotiations over a possible agreement connected to the regional crisis and maritime security concerns in the Gulf.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, and disruptions in the area have continued to raise concerns over global energy supplies and regional stability.
