New Delhi, June 7 – In a strong move to safeguard consumer rights in the digital landscape, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued a fresh advisory to e-commerce platforms urging them to eliminate misleading tactics often referred to as “dark patterns.”
This advisory is part of the government’s wider campaign to improve transparency and fairness in online shopping and service platforms. All digital commerce websites have been asked to carry out internal audits within three months to identify and address any deceptive design practices that could manipulate user behavior or mislead buyers.
The advisory encourages e-commerce companies to voluntarily submit a self-declaration affirming that their platforms are free from such manipulative strategies. This measure, officials say, aims to foster a healthy digital commerce ecosystem rooted in consumer trust and ethical practices.
The CCPA has also taken action against violators by sending notices to platforms found in breach of the existing Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns. These dark patterns include deceptive tactics such as false urgency, hidden costs (basket sneaking), and pre-checked boxes that trick users into purchases or subscriptions.
The consumer watchdog has cautioned all digital platforms to avoid using interface designs that mislead shoppers or pressure them into making unintended decisions.
In support of this initiative, the Department of Consumer Affairs has formed a Joint Working Group (JWG) consisting of experts from government ministries, regulatory authorities, consumer advocacy groups, and law universities. The JWG’s role is to monitor e-commerce platforms for violations, provide regular updates, and recommend awareness programs to educate the public about deceptive online practices.
The 2023 guidelines published by the Department outline 13 specific types of dark patterns. This recent push reinforces the government’s commitment to ensuring that the booming online marketplace remains ethical, transparent, and fair to every consumer.
