CWG 2026: Om Birla Congratulates India’s Medal Winners After Impressive Weightlifting Performance

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday applauded India’s athletes for delivering an outstanding performance at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Scotland, praising the country’s medal winners for their dedication and determination on the international stage.

Speaking during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Birla congratulated Olympic champion Mirabai Chanu for capturing the gold medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event. He also acknowledged the silver medal-winning performances of Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi, along with para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar, who secured a bronze medal.

The Speaker said the athletes had brought immense pride to the country through their hard work and commitment. He also conveyed his best wishes to their families and coaches, recognising their contribution to India’s sporting achievements.

India enjoyed another successful day at the Commonwealth Games, with weightlifting once again emerging as one of the country’s strongest events. Mirabai Chanu etched her name in history by claiming her third straight Commonwealth Games gold medal, reinforcing her dominance in the sport.

In the men’s competition, Rishikanta Singh earned a silver medal in the 60kg category, while Raja Muthupandi followed with another silver in the 65kg division, strengthening India’s medal haul.

Adding to the celebrations, para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar secured a bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight category. Competing in Glasgow, the 28-year-old registered a best lift of 190 kg, producing a podium finish that further boosted India’s tally.

With multiple medals coming from weightlifting, India’s campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 continues on a positive note, reflecting the country’s growing strength across both Olympic and para sporting disciplines.
