Zurich: FIFA has initiated a formal investigation into the post-match altercation that broke out after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to win the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. The governing body has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the incident, which involved players and team officials from both sides.

The confrontation occurred immediately after the final whistle at the stadium in New Jersey. The situation reportedly escalated when Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes confronted Spain defender Eric Garcia, leading to a heated exchange that quickly drew in several players, substitutes and coaching staff members.

Television footage showed players from both teams pushing and shoving each other before officials stepped in to separate them. Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni was also seen trying to calm his players as tensions flared.

The final itself was highly competitive and physical.
