New Delhi, June 15: Indian Railways has approved a major railway safety project worth ₹201 crore for the Ambala Division of Northern Railway. The project aims to install the indigenous Kavach train protection system across key rail routes in northern India.

The initiative will cover 811 route kilometres and is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to enhance safety and modernize train operations.

The approved project includes several important railway sections in Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. These routes are among the busiest corridors for passenger and freight movement.

The sections selected for Kavach installation include:

  • Ambala Cantonment–Ludhiana
  • Kalka–Chandigarh–New Morinda–Sahnewal
  • Sirhind–Daulatpur Chowk
  • Rajpura–Bathinda–Shri Ganganagar
  • Ludhiana–Dhuri–Jakhal

These routes play a crucial role in regional connectivity and economic activity.

Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system created to improve railway safety. The technology helps prevent accidents caused by Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD).

The system can automatically apply brakes when required and regulate train speed in risky situations. It also reduces the possibility of collisions and enhances operational efficiency.

Indian Railways is steadily expanding the deployment of Kavach across its network. The technology is being prioritized on high-density and strategically important routes.

The latest approval for the Ambala Division is expected to improve safety standards while supporting smoother train movement across northern states.

The railway corridors covered under the project handle significant passenger traffic and freight operations every day. The installation of Kavach will help ensure safer journeys and more reliable transportation services.

Officials believe the project will strengthen rail infrastructure and contribute to the long-term modernization of India’s railway network.

The ₹201-crore project reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to adopting advanced, homegrown technologies. As Kavach expands to more routes, it is expected to play a key role in making train travel safer, more efficient and more dependable for millions of passengers across the country.
