Rahul Gandhi targets BJP, EC over Bengal Chief Secretary appointment

Congress MP calls Bengal administration a “chor bazaar” after former Chief Electoral Officer is elevated to the state’s top bureaucratic post

New Delhi, May 12, 2026: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp political attack on the newly formed West Bengal government after former Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal was appointed Chief Secretary of the state, alleging deep collusion between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Election Commission.

Reacting strongly to the appointment, Rahul Gandhi described the move as evidence of what he termed a “BJP EC chor bazaar,” suggesting that the promotion of a senior election official immediately after overseeing the state assembly polls raised serious concerns over institutional neutrality and democratic integrity.

The controversy erupted after the BJP led West Bengal government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari appointed Agarwal as the state’s top administrative officer shortly after the party’s victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. Opposition leaders have questioned the timing of the appointment, arguing it creates an appearance of political reward for electoral management.

Rahul Gandhi’s criticism adds to the growing political storm surrounding the administrative reshuffle in Bengal, where opposition parties, particularly the Trinamool Congress and Congress, are increasingly targeting the BJP over alleged misuse of constitutional institutions.

The appointment has intensified the broader national debate over the independence of electoral bodies and bureaucratic appointments, with Gandhi framing the issue as part of a larger challenge to democratic accountability in India.
