Vijay’s TVK Faces Hurdle in Government Formation Despite 112 MLAs Support in Tamil Nadu

Governor Asks for Clear Majority as Political Drama Intensifies in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu’s post-election political scene witnessed a dramatic twist on Wednesday as actor-turned-politician Vijay, leading the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), formally approached the Governor with a claim to form the next government. Despite presenting the backing of 112 MLAs, the Governor reportedly advised the party to demonstrate support of at least 118 legislators to ensure a stable majority.

The development has added fresh uncertainty to the state’s political future, even as TVK continues negotiations with multiple parties to strengthen its numbers.

In a surprising outcome of the recently concluded assembly elections, TVK managed to outperform both Dravidian giants, DMK and AIADMK, emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats.

Following the verdict, the party claimed to have secured additional backing from the Congress and several smaller regional groups, taking its support base to 112 MLAs. However, this still fell short of the Governor’s expected majority threshold.

A key shift in the equation came when the Congress extended conditional support to Vijay’s leadership. The party stated that it would back any formation that keeps “communal forces outside the constitutional framework,” a remark widely interpreted in political circles as a strategic positioning statement.

Senior Congress leaders, including top decision-makers in Delhi, were reportedly involved in finalizing the support move, while outreach to Left parties and regional outfits such as VCK and IUML is still underway.

Earlier speculation of a possible understanding between TVK and AIADMK also surfaced, especially after internal divisions emerged within AIADMK over post-election strategy. However, those talks reportedly lost momentum once Congress formally entered the picture.

Meanwhile, TVK leaders remain engaged in last-minute discussions to secure additional backing ahead of the proposed government formation timeline.

Preparations for a possible oath-taking ceremony on May 8 were briefly initiated, but the Governor’s request for a clearer majority has put those plans on hold.

Sources suggest that high-level leaders from across the political spectrum, including national figures, may attend if the government formation is finalized.

The evolving situation has also triggered strong reactions from rival parties. DMK leaders criticized Congress for shifting alliances, accusing it of political opportunism in the fast-changing scenario.

With numbers still in flux and negotiations ongoing, Tamil Nadu’s political future remains undecided.
