New Delhi, April 29, 2026: India has strongly condemned recent attacks targeting commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, describing the incidents as deplorable and raising serious concerns over the safety of international shipping lanes.
Speaking at a United Nations forum, Indian representatives highlighted that repeated strikes on merchant ships threaten global trade stability, energy supplies and the security of seafarers navigating one of the world’s most crucial maritime corridors.
Officials underlined that freedom of navigation must be fully protected under international law and stressed that such disruptions have direct implications for India’s energy security and economic interests. They also pointed to earlier UN resolutions that call for safeguarding civilian maritime activity and ensuring uninterrupted passage through key sea routes.
India further reiterated its consistent position that escalation of tensions in the region is unacceptable and urged all parties involved to exercise restraint, avoid further deterioration of the situation and work towards restoring stability through diplomatic engagement.
The statement comes amid growing international concern over rising maritime tensions in the Gulf region, where shipping routes remain critical for global oil and goods transport.
