Senior police officer Yogesh Kumar Sharma suffered a fatal gunshot wound after his weapon allegedly discharged accidentally while he was preparing to return it after transfer.

Punjab: A senior police officer in Phagwara died on Tuesday after his service revolver allegedly discharged while he was handling the weapon at his official residence, police said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Yogesh Kumar Sharma, 55, was reportedly cleaning the revolver before returning it to the Anti-Narcotics Task Force following his transfer to the Bureau of Investigation in Chandigarh.

Officials said the firearm went off during the process, causing a fatal chest injury. He was taken to a nearby civil hospital after colleagues and others in the police quarters responded to the gunshot, but doctors declared him dead.

Police have described the incident as accidental, with officials saying there was no indication of suicide based on initial findings and statements from family members.

Proceedings have been initiated under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, while statements are being recorded as part of the inquest. Authorities said a post-mortem by a medical board will help establish further details.
