Sleeping With Phone Near Pillow May Pose Health Risks, Doctors Advise Caution

Doctors warn that sleeping with a mobile phone near the head or under the pillow may increase health risks due to radiation and blue light, affecting sleep and brain health.

New Delhi, January 17: Doctors have warned that sleeping with a mobile phone close to the head or under the pillow may pose potential health risks in the long term, urging people to adopt safer digital habits, especially at night.

According to medical experts, prolonged exposure to electromagnetic radiation emitted by smartphones could have adverse effects on health if phones are kept close to the body for extended periods. While research is ongoing, the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified mobile phone radiation as a “possible carcinogen,” advising caution in usage patterns.

Health experts also highlight that keeping a phone near the head during sleep may increase the risk of neurological stress. Studies have suggested a possible association between excessive radiation exposure and brain-related health concerns, prompting doctors to recommend maintaining distance from electronic devices during rest.

In addition to radiation concerns, doctors point out that blue light emitted from smartphone screens disrupts the body’s natural sleep cycle. Blue light suppresses melatonin production, keeps the brain alert, and can lead to poor sleep quality, fatigue, and long-term lifestyle-related disorders.

Medical professionals advise keeping mobile phones away from the bed at night, switching devices to airplane mode if necessary, and avoiding screen use before sleep to protect overall health and improve sleep hygiene.
