Malda (West Bengal), January 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of multiple rail and road infrastructure projects worth over ₹3,250 crore in Malda, marking a major push towards strengthening connectivity in West Bengal and the North-Eastern region.

Addressing a public gathering, the Prime Minister said the launch of India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train represents a significant milestone in the modernization of Indian Railways. The train, connecting Howrah with Guwahati (Kamakhya), is designed to offer faster, safer and more comfortable long-distance travel while reducing journey time by nearly two and a half hours.

Highlighting the cultural significance of the route, the Prime Minister said the sleeper train connects the land of Maa Kali with the land of Maa Kamakhya and reflects the vision of a developed and self-reliant India. He added that the Made-in-India train showcases the growing global recognition of India’s railway technology.

The Prime Minister also flagged off four new Amrit Bharat Express trains, enhancing affordable long-distance connectivity between North Bengal and major destinations in South and Western India. He said these services will benefit pilgrims, students, migrant workers and traders, while boosting tourism and economic activity.

In addition, foundation stones were laid for key railway infrastructure projects, including new rail lines, electrification works, maintenance facilities and highway expansion on NH-31D, aimed at improving logistics, generating employment and accelerating regional development.

Governor of West Bengal C V Ananda Bose and Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw, Shantanu Thakur and Sukanta Majumdar were among the dignitaries present on the occasion.
